On Saturday, June 19, Sheldon Oak and our partner organization Summer of Solutions joined forces to kick off the summer with a cookout to celebrate Juneteenth. Festivities took place on the grounds of the Johnson-Stewart Community Center, 127 Martin Street.
After more than a year of pandemic lockdowns, people were ready to get together to relax, have fun, and hang out with family and friends, old and new. Everyone stayed outside, despite the heat, and people kept coming and going all day. We easily gave away all the food we bought - more than 100 hot dogs and 135 hamburgers. All the cupcakes went too, even though the frosting melted in the heat! We also gave away many items including books, clothing, and toys.
With our youth interns and community volunteers, we are sprucing up the community garden on site with the love and expertise of Sonsharae Owens, our new AmeriCorps member and the Executive Director of Summer of Solutions. Sheldon Oak and Summer of Solutions look forward to hosting many more fun events and activities at the Center this summer!
