42-56 Vine Street Project
Upper Albany Neighborhood
Hartford’s Upper Albany neighborhood is one of Sheldon Oak’s three central neighborhoods of focus. Upper Albany is immediately adjacent to the Northeast neighborhood and faces similar challenges, including a high number of blighted and vacant buildings.
Sheldon Oak Central (SOC) is currently in the process of purchasing 42-56 Vine Street, a .65 acre property that includes three (3) buildings and forty-two (42) apartments, each have three (3) stories. Two of the buildings are historic, known as the Horace Bushnell Apartments, built in 1914 and 1925, which are built out of brick, stone, and concrete. One is considered a more modern construction, built in 1961. They are located in Hartford's North End residential neighborhood on the east side of Vine Street between Albany Avenue and Mather Street. These three buildings are adjacent to the 4-40 Vine Street buildings, which are already part of the Sheldon Oak Central community. SOC is in the predevelopment stages of moderate rehabilitation of the three (3) buildings, which will round out the neighborhood nicely and add to its revitalization.
